Community Service

At the end of August, many of our students, parents and staff volunteered their time at the ACTIV Foundation City to Surf Fun Run, assisting at water stations, the pre-event expo and the finish line. A big thank you, to all those who gave up their time for this event. A special mention to my water station supervisor mums, Rebecca Shillington and Jacinta Rimington who did a fabulous job organizing everyone and making sure the stations ran smoothly. I think everyone that helped out had a fun morning and it was made even more enjoyable having the sunshine out!

Thank you to those students who assisted Notre Dame University at their Open Day recently. The supervisor made special mention of how much she loves having Penrhos girls assist at the events as they are so organized and willing to get involved in all the jobs that need doing.

Thank you to all the students who have given up their time over the past term, whether that be helping out at Junior School, music recitals, sporting events, showing guests around the College or making items to be donated, you are all contributing to the core shared values of the College and we commend you on that.

I’d also like to thank Hannah Knight for approaching St James Newstart Pharmacy and Pharmacy 777 Applecross and asking for any products they could donate towards our Hygiene Care Packs for the Homeless Program. These wonderful businesses have supplied us with products that will help with many people in need.

The holidays are almost upon us, and this is a great time to get involved in local community activities. SPYN (South Perth Youth Network) are always looking for volunteers so if you want to find out more, check out their website: South Perth Youth Network

Activities you can do at home and in the holidays:

  • Make a rug for foster kids- For every rug you make, you receive 2 hours of service. How to make a fleece rug
  • Gather hygiene items and place them in a zip-lock bag or pencil case for the homeless eg, toothpaste, toothbrush, deodorant, warm socks, brush, comb, dental floss etc
  • Donate an old handbag filled with pamper items for women fleeing domestic violence eg, candle, book, magazine, nail polish, chocolate, body lotion etc
  • Grab an old shoe box, cover it in nice paper and fill it full of items a little girl or boy might like eg toys, comics, books, pencils, stickers, hair clips, colouring in books etc.
  • Make your own food or toy hamper in a washing basket for a family or kids
  • Sew some material into joey pouches (use flannelette material) Joey Pouch Instructions
Here is an example video How to make Joey and Possum Pouches

A reminder to all Year 12s that final submission of your Community Service Booklets is Wednesday, 12 September. This gives us time to submit them for your Awards and for Graduation.
